This 70,000 square foot new Port Campus for NSCAD University is intended as a catalyst for a waterfront cultural district in Halifax. It involved the renovation of a large industrial warehouse to accommodate the “dirty arts” (sculpture, metal work, foundry, woodwork, stone, plastics and ceramics). The architecture assumes the role of unobtrusive infrastructure for art education. The scheme makes a minimalist 200 foot loggia gallery on its city face, and a 200 foot window on the harbour. The clear spatial parti reinforces the industrial aesthetic.
