This is a permanent home for a helicopter mechanic who builds wind turbines on the mountaintop above, and his family of four. The site for this project (currently under construction) is in Mount Thom, within the Cobequid Mountains in central Nova Scotia. The Burge House is embedded in a hill at the top of a long meadow/marsh.

This house is an extruded ‘folded corrugated Cor-Ten steel clip’, supported by structural steel frames at 20’ on-centre. Its monolithic form rests entirely within a concrete retaining wall structure that is 144’ long and 20’ high. The site offers three conditions: valley, brook and mountain road, which were all used to organize the plan.

The lower level of the house is split into two long rooms: a vault for the client’s collection of vintage cars and a parallel lap pool with views of the cars. The main level program is organized around two totemic ‘centre-cores’ housing service rooms, the hearth and kitchen. Private spaces are located at either end of the plan, with lateral views.
