The West Hants Sports Complex is a large-scale recreation project located in the community of Windsor Nova Scotia. The client was the West Hants Regional Municipality, with MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple working with Lindsay Construction in a design-build partnership. The complex includes an ice arena (John Paris Jr. Rink), multi-use turf field, walking track, and community gathering spaces. It was designed to compliment the collection of agrarian type infrastructure and spaces on the local agricultural grounds, of which it is situated. The building design has a clearly visible single entrance on the south face of the building, with arrival into a generous lobby and warm room space shared by both the fieldhouse and arena. The design provides ample space for heritage and cultural displays and social interaction amongst users. The building layout has a rational organization, allowing for clear conceptual relationships between spaces and the definition of public and private uses. The elevated walking track traverses both the arena, and the warm room, connecting beside the fieldhouse viewing area, creating greater visual connectivity and social interaction throughout the facility. The walking track has active edges, places suitable for stretching and warmup off-track, rest and water stations. A community and family room included above the main entrance to the facility, allows for outward views across the parking towards the rural landscape beyond. The use of translucent panels in both the arena and the fieldhouse allows users to enjoy recreation activities in natural light, while maintaining a visual connection to the exterior.
